Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Returning from holidays

It’s been such a long time since the last time I wrote a post. I haven’t abandoned the blog, though. Now I have my own Creative Commons button and have some posts prepared for later (well, the titles and some lorem ipsum inside ;-) )Why deny it? This has been a very busy summer and I felt the time left by work and study was better of doing other things. Things that if I was paid for this blog I would sure write about in different posts, different weeks. But given that this is the less profitable blog that ever existed (true story), let’s do a little summary of the last weeks

First things first, the Camino de Santiago. I didn’t want to write about it just when I came back so my thoughts were well formed. The thing is, quite some time has passed since then, we are back in our lives and I fell the Camino brings me memories that collide. There are fantastic moments I’ll never forget, but there are also a lot of boring moments result of doing it all in just one go. 28 days in one go gives a lot of experience, a wider vision and enough training to go on on the last hard stages (from Oviedo to Santiago). Doing the Camino del Norte thorugh the Camino Primitivo instead of the Camino Frances was a perfect choice and quite a pleasant surprise. I would really recommend that route if you’re thinking about tranquility, beatiful places and avoid fighting with over 200 people for somewhere to sleep.

Lo mejor de todo es que cuando lo veo pienso: “¡Está bastante bien!”

We met a lot of horrible people, some good and just a few we’ll never forget. The best people we met was 50 years old or older. There are a lot of stories to tell too (the huge James Bond foe-like Lithuanian that said:”I break you knee with Bushido art!”, the french guy that tried to look miserable so we gave our food to him, the magnificient Lolo that told us his curious life story, Don Ernesto’s magic albergue, our fast step in the final stages called “Northstep”, character playtesting of D&D4 in the albergues…)

Verdict? It was a really great experience but I hoped the first day’s adventure feeling would last longer, not walking that much on car road, and more albergues. I think it would have been perfect if we did 10 days instead of 28 (Oviedo to Santiago maybe), but who knows if our body would have been able to manage it without the physical progression. Next time we are doing Santiago to Finisterre, just 5 days, so we can revive the great memories we have and finish the journey.

Great end of the Camino

Once I was back, the summer went on without news. I played Metal Gear Solid 4 (great game), Soul Calibur IV (could be a lot better), I had to do some work, prepare two exams and rest. I also got my new baby tuned up (an Asus eee 900), process I will share as as how-to lightweight Debian

In the other hand, this year roleplaying strikes back. We are gonna play weekly, except one week a month for board and card games. I will be a GURPS 4th master, game which I will probably review later. Atrus will be a D&D4 master mainly, but will surely master other games too. D&D4 has been quite a surprise for us. We do like a lot interpretative roleplaying, but this one looks to be really fun and is faster to have a campaign or session going. Lately we played Catan and Jungle Speed, both really fun.

Just before going back to the university I’ve been 4 days in London that were really great too (not because of the boring British Museum) Having been two times already we did a bit of a speed run, so we have seen quite a lot of things and enjoyed the city. Quite good.

The academic year has started, and so I’m looking into my final project. When all has been decided and I have something to show, I’ll write about it.

Camino de Santiago

Thought. Redemption. Freedom. Will challenge. Disappear for some time. Find oneself. Flee from what drives us mad to understand. Learn. Visit awesome places. Learn to value everything we have. Survival training.

There are a million reasons to go do the Camino de Santiago. Which are mine? Some are up here, others aren’t. Anyway, today Saturday June 21st I have left for a month. It’s gonna be awesome!

So, it’s time to say good bye for some time. Do not do nothing I wouldn’t!

Books, books, books…

It looks I’m getting old. Nothing I can do about it, though! I always defended , ad-hoc, “electronic documentation”, but lately I’m more into reading technical books let the first one to when it’s worth: ad-hoc problem solving

That’s how I got to propose in the e-ghost mail list to create a recommended books thread (here!) that I hope will be growing with the knowledge of the people of e-ghost.

When I finish some of them probably I’ll write about them here. Anyway, txipi, one of the most knowledgeable members of e-ghost, has published in bubok, lulu and his blog some C lessons in GNU/Linux (Only spanish, sorry!). Haven’t read it yet, but I’m sure it will be great!

I would like to publish something in lulu someday… What geek or nerd hasn’t dreamed about publishing it’s own writings?

Fun in abundance

It was just until some time ago that I thought about board and card games in a very classic way; When the idea came to my mind, it came with examples like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit or Scattergories. It’s actually weird considering how much I like playing and mastering pen & paper RPGs (the ones most based on interpetation, of course) since more than 10 years ago, and because of that, me being so close to other board and card games. I could say Magic: The Gathering was a short time exception.

Things changed when I played Arkham Horror. Since I always enjoyed a lot horror, investigation and occultism games like “Call of Cthulhu“, it came as no surprise how much I do enjoy this game. Given it’s complexity, options, elements and everything, it seemed like a perfect match. As positive as the experience was, it wasn’t still time for those games to become another hobby. It was difficult enough to find time and people to role-play, it seemed impossible to also get running some sessions of those fun boxes.

Some time later I could play “Fairy Tales“, “Once upon a time” and the excellent “Citadels“, all of them Atrus’ games. I liked a lot the first and second, and really loved the third because of how easy but deep and engaging it was. A lot more people I know started to be interested in those games too! Another thing we understood was that board games required more interested players and quite some time, paying back with deep gaming. Generally speaking, card games were the opposite.

I recently decided to buy Arkham Horror and two expansion kits and Bang! The Bullet and Atrus bought Doom and it’s expansion kit. Everything has proved to be quite a good buy by now, especially Arkham Horror and Doom.

Those board and card games have been a great discovery. Try them, you won’t regret it ;-)
